Amy’s story

Amy grew up in Cuba, with no Christians in her family. However, when she was young, she dreamt of God, but didn’t really understand who He was or what the dreams were about.

Between high school and university, Amy attended a school with 60 women in the dormitories – only one was a Christian and she became Amy’s roommate. As Amy heard her roommate’s Christian music, she liked it and asked for the lyrics. Amy not only received the song lyrics, but there was always a prayer of salvation added at the end.

Later, when Amy’s grandmother (who raised her since she was 8) was dying of cancer, she remembered going out on the balcony and crying up to heaven, “God, if you are real, show yourself to me!” It was then that she remembered the song lyrics her roommate gave her. She found the paper and noticed the prayer at the bottom and made it personal.

It was at this time that Amy realized her dreams had to do with the Bible. God told Amy in a dream that she needed a Bible, so she purchased one. After reading the book of Matthew, she discovered how to follow Jesus. In another dream, God told Amy to go to an evangelical church. So, she did. She told her husband she was going to start a Bible study in their garage. He said she was crazy.

Later, Juan Carlos, a pastor with Multiplication Network, visited their church and preached a powerful sermon. Amy went right up to him afterward and said, “You and I will work together.” He said she was crazy. But Juan Carlos saw her desire and offered to disciple Amy and her husband. In time they took the Multiplication Network church planter training and started a church in their garage.

“We didn’t know where we would meet, but I knew God would surprise us,” Amy recalls. “And He did with a church building that was vacated during the pandemic and had all the furnishings.  Now we are starting a new church in a town of 22,000 people a few kilometers away. We found a building and are renovating it. We don’t have any people attending yet, but I know God will surprise us. When the Holy Spirit comes.., you have no reason to fear.”
